Kanopy - Streaming Media

Answer

The Library will continue to offer streaming media options through Academic Video Online and Films on Demand. However, the unlimited access to streaming media using Kanopy will not be renewed after August 31, 2021.
Please note: we still subscribe to some Kanopy films and some films we had via Kanopy are now available via our other video services like Academic Video Online. Please check OneSearch for streaming video options.

The SF Public Library (SFPL) subscribes to Kanopy.  Access is provided via a SFPL account (any resident in California is eligible).

Why is Kanopy not being continued at SFSU?

In August of 2020 the Library and Academic Technology negotiated a license with the Kanopy media streaming service using 2020-21 CARES Act 2 funding. This license allowed unlimited access to all content on Kanopy and was intended to support media for online instruction. In February 2021 the Library and Academic Technology approached Kanopy about a possible renewal of the license. Kanopy’s response was an 88% increase to the current price for a total cost of $170,000. Academic Technology and the Library determined this was neither a responsible or sustainable expenditure and decided not to renew the unlimited program with Kanopy.

Access to the entire Kanopy collection will remain available through August 2021. Many titles will remain available well beyond that date as they are available for a full year after use "triggers" a one-year license. SF State faculty and students are encouraged to continue using the Kanopy content while it is still available. Faculty members who have been using a Kanopy streaming media title in their classes and plan to use it in fall semester 2021 and/or spring semester 2022 should submit a request using the Library’s Media Purchase Request form. Programs that are interested in bundling requests for multiple titles or have other questions about access to Kanopy streaming media titles can contact David Hellman, Library Collection Development Coordinator, at hellman@sfsu.edu
